“I love illy espresso and coffee and this machine is a great way to have both. I have owned a Francis Francis X1 iperespresso machine for about 5 years and I love it. It makes a perfect espresso with a nice crema. I like the single-serve capsules since I travel a lot and can’t finish a can of ground espresso or coffee quickly enough. I have always wished there was a way to get both single-serve espresso and coffee from an illy machine like some other brands do. I got my wish in this machine.
The Y5 Duo is a very good machine and a good-looking machine too. Most importantly the espresso is every bit as good as from my X1, Maybe the crema from the X1 is a little better (and I’m not sure of that) but the X1 also costs twice as much. The coffee is also very good, close to the illy coffee I make with a drip coffee maker at home. The features are nice and simple. There are 2 buttons to start the brewing – one for espresso and one for coffee. You can easily customize the volume of espresso or coffee dispensed by just holding the button for a brew cycle and letting go when you have enough. The volume is remembered for the next time and then you just touch the brew button once. I like that it ejects the used capsules into a container which I empty and rinse periodically.If anyone is concerned about the environmental impact of these rather substantial plastic capsules, I just place the used capsules in a plastic 1 gal. zipper bag and when the bag is full bring it to the Sur la Table store at the mall to recycle them for free. illy.com mentions this method plus 2 other ways to recycle the capsules.” Jim
